Game Review: Rule of Rose

I don’t even know where to start with this one. But I do hope you like the review.

Oh, and here a link to Rule of Rose Mysteries, which is also linked from the sidebar. It’s one of my favorite sites.

Nice review. It’s awesome that you found something you fell in love with that affected you in a big way like that.

It’s a shame Rule of Rose has the flaws it did. I bought the game years ago and I really wanted to like it, but the combat and getting lost destroyed the experience for me. But I see it has a lot of fans who were able to enjoy it for what it was trying to be. I’m glad you were able to look past what, to me, were barriers, and enjoy it a lot anyway.

Glad you enjoyed the review. :)

Like I said, I can understand why people would bail on this game. There were times when I considered it, too. But I just had this nagging feeling that if I persevered, the payoff would be worth it.

your outfit is rather lovely yet it fightens me *hides in the corner*

I’m guessing the persona I used has something to do with that. ^^; I needed to play a character that basically has no emotions, or else there’s no way I could’ve gotten through this review without crying.

    Hi,
I followed pokernemesis link to your video.
it is quite nice, and i’m touched that you feel so much about ror, too.
I know i’m beyond salvation, but after years, and hundreds of hours playing the game, me i even like the battle system now : )

That’s a nice feeling to see they are other artists who express something about that really wonderful story, and the emotions that rose from it.

    Congrats !

Liking the battle system? Wow. That’s… that’s… astonishing. O_o

All jokes aside, thank you! I’ve yet to play another game with a story that affected me as much as this one did, though Silent Hill 2 came close.

First off, I love the battle system for one reason (even though it;s extremely difficult to deal with and frustrating), because it’s how a person like Jennifer would actually fight. She’s horrified, doesn’t know what’s going on, and a bit crazy. Of course fighting anything isn’t going to be the slightest bit easy for her. The battle system makes sense from that aspect, and I believe that might be how they intended it. There’s such a lack of deeper information on this video game for a reason.

I adore that you know what this game is actually about. It’s definitely a deep, symbol-filled game. This is my favorite video game of all time for that reason; it’s SOOO much more than it appears to be. I followed the link from ruleofrosemysteries.com to this video, and that site says what the game truly is about.

The story, deeper secrets, and EVERYTHING make suffering through the combat definiteeelllyyy worth it. You’re soooo right about that. I’ve spent so long thinking over this game and it breaks my heart when people just dash the game and think it’s stupid.

“Rule of Rose is about memories and how valuable they are. As well as how time and circumstance can soften and change their colors. It’s also about childhood friendship -, the trust, the love, the innocence. And how little, or how much it can take for things to go horribly wrong. And finally it’s about growing up, and being forced to realize what truly matters most.” asdkljfsdglksadglaw YOU’RE SO RIGHT! Thank you for being so eloquent :D

Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the review! :) But although I respect your opinion on the combat system, we’ll have to have to differ there. Yes, that might be what they were *trying* to do, but without getting into an exhaustive list of reasons, they did it rather poorly.

The Silent Hill games do it well. I get a good feeling of tension and fear, and I never question the programmers’ competence. For one thing, about 95% of the time, you don’t actually have to fight. With a little luck and planning, you can run from most encounters unscathed if you choose — which would likely be most sane people’s first choice if surrounding by horrible monsters. And when I do choose to fight (or have to face a boss), I have fun in the process or at least don’t find it annoying.

The cardinal sin of Rule of Rose? The combat just isn’t fun. :\ For most gamers, anything beyond that doesn’t matter. But like I said, if you’re the type who can forgive that for a good enough story, the rewards found here greatly outweigh the pain.

That was an excellent review Pixie. I remember back when Digital Devil saga came out there was a lot of buzz at the atlus forums about this game being released and a lot of the comments were really unacurate. By then my attention had gone elsewhere and then after the game was released the professional reviews were very very harsh. So after that I had forgotten about this game till now.
I am kinda torn right now because I do want to check this game out but at the same time I know myself and I get pretty frustrated when games are unfairly hard that I dont have all the time in the world to a game a might give up on down the line…

    • The Pixie says:

Sorry I took so long, but I’m glad you enjoyed the review! ^_^ IMO, the game isn’t *hard*; it’s just that the gameplay can get REALLY annoying because aspects of it weren’t implemented well. IMO, it comes down to patience and frustration tolerance more than skill.

  6. Luke says:

Wow, that was an amazing well-made review. I love Rule of Rose despite its flaws and am very glad you see the same beauty in it.

    • The Pixie says:

Apologies for taking so long, but thank you! :D And yeah, if you can get past its more frustrating aspects, it really is a “Must Experience and Savor” type of game.

  7. Pekoe the Ghost says:

Oh my! This game looks amazing! Please let me know what console it’s for! The controls will be no problem, I think… I finished Fragile Dreams, after all, and that game had the same problems, PLUS the weapons broke. Oh well… I will look for this one….

    • The Pixie says:

Hiya! ^_^ Rule of Rose is for the Playstation 2. It can be a little hard to come by, though.

I got my copy on Half.com for a reasonable price (Ebay auctions of it tend to get out of hand), but that was a few years ago, and it might’ve gone up since then. You can try Amazon, too.

  8. Grildings says:

Great review! I did not know about this game, you convinced me on getting it and now Im about to give it my best try!

Anyways, I recently discovered you and I must say your reviews are very enjoyable :D

    Keep it up!

This game is incredible. Such a beautiful yet sad story. It haunted me in my dreams for a couple of •cough• days. I’m not the kind of person you see playing a Survival Horror game. Seriously. But this game… I’ve played it twice. Jennifer is so cute wiith the Lolita costume. It’s a pity this game is hated by almost everyone. The graphics are great and the combat system is not as bad as it seems. I kinda like it. But I think if I were to fight like that I would just RUN. Just a question: Why 98.7% of the Horror games have something that resembles Nurses? Like Nurse costumes, Killer Nurses, an evil nurse twin… Why the nurses are so hated by horror games producers?

  10. Three-P says:

Sony of America didn’t want to be associated with this? The same Sony of America that gave us the God of War series? Unbelievable, ain’t it?

  11. YULIANA says:

love your outfit. suit good on you ;)

  12. CainCainn says:

    Love the review! :)
And me too – with such a complicated and annoying combat system, I simply wanted to throw my controller at my TV. Good thing I didn’t! The story is fascinating, it has one of the best plots I’ve seen.

Anyway, love the review, keep it up! :)
